Please note: No further applications can be accepted for this year's adult Learn to Row program, as all seats have been filled. The information below is provided for reference only.

Learn to Row classes are intended for new members who have little or no experience, or for those who desire a refresher course. The program is three weeks long with three lessons per week, for a total of nine lessons. Each lesson takes approximately two hours. Class size is limited to ten rowers in the interest of safety and instructional quality. All participants must be able to swim. The total session fee is $200, payable in advance.

Participants will receive an introduction to the sport from experienced coaches, with ample personal attention. Instruction includes orientation, safety, boat handling, sweep rowing technique, and coxing. A relaxed atmosphere ensures that all participants have fun. Graduates receive a PRRA t-shirt and an invitation to join the Community Rowing Program.

Course Contents

The first lesson begins with the popular and humorous safety video, followed by land-based instruction on rowing machines. After everyone is comfortable with the basic mechanics of the stroke, we bring a boat to the dock and get the feel of rowing in the boat without leaving the dock. Once the coach feels that it is safe to row, the novice crew—with the addition of some experienced rowers—pushes off the dock for a water session. The boat is accompanied by a coach in a safety boat. Later lessons make use of videotaping to further illustrate the rowing stroke and to help students understand their personal development needs.

Participants should plan to attend all nine lessons. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about the Learn to Row program.
